I want to go back to something I touched on last month in an article called When Christians Disagree. What do we do when well-meaning Christians who love Jesus come down on opposite sides of an issue?
It’s happening right now. All you have to do is to read the comments that are posted on Facebook almost every day to see just how much Christians disagree. Take the COVID 19 situation for example – they disagree about wearing face masks. They disagree about following government suggestions or requirements. They disagree about whether churches should open and hold services like we did pre-pandemic. They even disagree about whether or not there actually is a pandemic.
While we can disagree on the issues there is one area where we should not disagree and that is our response. Our response as Christians is not up for debate or disagreement. Whatever we think about the issue, our response is to be formed on the foundation of love. Remember the Great Commandment?
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 22:37-40).
Love of God and others is to be the guiding principle of our lives. Nothing is to be done outside of those parameters.
Every word we speak, every act we engage in, every post on social media is to be drenched in the love of God.
We can disagree – let’s do it in love. You can post your opinions on social media – do it in love. We can even belong to different political parties and back different candidates – we need to do it in love.
Every opportunity in life is an opportunity to respond in love. This pandemic is no different.
Stay in the Word
